sliced porosity block' by steven holl architects

steven holl architects is currently working on 4 projects in china. already, the najing museum and 'linked hybrid'
are both set to open later this year and the vanke center in shenzhen is currently under construction.
now, work will begin on the 'chengdu project' which is scheduled to open in 2010.

the 105,000 sq. ft. site consists of a massive mixed use complex which is designed to simulate micro-urbanism
called the 'sliced porosity block'. the site will feature a large central plaza housed above a shopping complex.
three ponds will provide water features for the plaza and allow light to filter into the shopping mall below.
diagonal escalators ascend upwards to three ‘buildings within buildings’ housed in alcoves in the building's
facades. these pavilions are designed by steven holl (history pavilion), lebbeus woods (high tech pavilion)
and ai wei wei (du fu pavilion). the whole site will be heated and cooled geo-thermally. through additional
ecological features the building achieved a gold LEED rating.
